Volumetric & Fluid Dynamics

Volume & Capacity Converter

Convert liquid capacity and 3D volumetric space across metric (liters, m³, mL) and imperial systems (US gallons, UK gallons, cubic feet, cubic yards, fluid ounces).

US Gallon vs. Imperial Gallon

The US liquid gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches (approx 3.7854 liters). The British Imperial gallon is defined as 4.54609 liters—making an Imperial gallon approximately 20% larger than a US gallon. When comparing fuel economy (miles per gallon / MPG), British ratings are naturally higher because the gallon unit itself is larger.

Volumetric Cubic Scaling

Remember that 3D volume scales with the cube of length ($L^3$). Since 1 yard equals 3 feet, 1 cubic yard equals $3 \\times 3 \\times 3 = 27$ cubic feet (not 3 or 9). Need to calculate bulk dirt or concrete? Check out our dedicated Cubic Yard Calculator.
